Conceptual Foundations

A guide to the key thinkers and sources behind the Integral of Life framework. Grouped by field, on the same scheme as the bibliography. The papers are grouped the other way, by where each one bears on the argument.

A note on method

Newton did not invent calculus and gravity in isolation. Darwin did not invent variation or selection. What they did was show that things already partially known, placed in the right relationship to each other, produced a shape with more explanatory power than the sum of its parts. This is that kind of contribution—a synthetic one, not a discovery from nowhere.

The originality of this book lies primarily in the model: the formal machinery that makes Parfit, Friston, Dawkins, Whitehead, Henrich, and Diamond speak to each other; the resonance criterion that unifies what those fields were separately describing; and the claim that these are not parallel accounts of different things but projections of the same underlying shape, seen from different rooms.

This is intended as a brief guide to the intellectual figures whose work underlies The Integral of Life. It is not a bibliography. It is a map of the intellectual landscape: who these people were, what they contributed, and why they matter to the framework. Organised by discipline, it is designed to help any reader—whether approaching the book as a general reader or as a professional in one of the relevant fields—understand where the framework sits in relation to the existing literature.

Each figure below contributed something the framework needed. None of them, working alone, seems to have had a full picture to share.

Philosophy of Identity and Mind19
Aristotle (384–322 BCE)

Greek philosopher, student of Plato, tutor of Alexander. His concept of eudaimonia—flourishing, the good life lived well—is the framework’s normative horizon. For Aristotle, eudaimonia is not a feeling but an activity: the ongoing exercise of distinctively human capacities at their highest level, sustained across a life. This maps directly onto the account of the examined life—not a state to be achieved but a practice to be maintained, requiring the deliberate cultivation of what has been integrated and the honest examination of what governs behaviour below the threshold of conscious choice. His virtue ethics—the claim that character is formed through repeated practice, that you become courageous by doing courageous things—is the model’s account of parameter set formation stated without the formal machinery: patterns are built through repetition, reinforced through habit, and resistant to revision because they were installed through practice rather than argument.

Daniel Dennett (1942–2024)

American philosopher of mind, Tufts University. His Multiple Drafts model in Consciousness Explained (1991) argues there is no single place in the brain where consciousness comes together—no Cartesian Theatre. His later From Bacteria to Bach and Back (2017) provides the evolutionary backstory: consciousness as a competence that evolved gradually, not a gift delivered all at once. The account extends Dennett: the Cartesian Theatre exists, but as a derived quantity—a short-term integral reconstituted moment to moment from the deeper parameter set beneath it. The theatre is the readout, not the storage.

Douglas Hofstadter (born 1945)

American cognitive scientist, Indiana University Bloomington. Gödel, Escher, Bach (1979) and I Am a Strange Loop (2007) pursue one idea across mathematics, music, and art: the strange loop, the shape a system acquires when it becomes complex enough to turn and refer to itself. Hofstadter’s claim is that the self is such a loop—not a thing inside the machinery but a pattern the machinery generates by modelling itself. The model takes the strange loop as the architecture of self-reference in a system that is already accumulating: the recursion is something the integral does, not something added to it. Gödel, Escher, Bach is also one of the two books in whose shadow this one is written.

David Hume (1711–1776)

Scottish philosopher, Edinburgh. The most important empiricist predecessor of the framework’s anti-essentialism. His bundle theory of the self—the report that introspection finds only a succession of perceptions, never a bare persisting self beneath them—is the philosophical demolition of the Simple View that Parfit later formalised analytically. The Integral inherits his anti-essentialism while supplying what he lacked: a positive account of what the self actually is if it is not a substance. His argument against miracles (1748) is Bayesian reasoning before Bayes formalised the mathematics: the posterior probability of any reported miracle, given the prior probability of natural regularity and the known unreliability of human testimony under conditions of strong motivation to believe, is always lower than the probability of the mundane alternative explanation. The argument is not that miracles are impossible—it is that rational priors almost always make them improbable, whatever the testimony. His scepticism about pure rationality runs as a corrective current through Madison’s Federalist Papers and through the constitutional architecture of every liberal democracy: stable institutions must be built on actual human psychology, not philosophical ideals.

John Locke (1632–1704)

English philosopher. His memory theory of personal identity—that you are the same person as the child in the photograph because memory connects you to that child’s experiences through an unbroken chain of recollection—is the closest pre-formal anticipation of the model’s continuity account in the philosophical tradition. Elegant, but it produces strange results at the edges: if you forget something completely, did it happen to you? The Integral answers the puzzle differently: what persists is not episodic memory but the parameter set built from what was integrated—the synaptic anatomy that was shaped by experience, most of which has long since decayed from conscious recall while remaining structurally present. Identity is not what you remember. It is what you have become. Locke’s political philosophy—the idea that legitimate government derives from the consent of the governed and forfeits its authority when it violates natural rights—runs through the American Constitution as its philosophical foundation and through the liberal democratic architecture the model analyses in Part Five. His patterns are so thoroughly embedded in the institutional structure of liberal democracies that most citizens operate within them without knowing his name.

Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527)

Florentine diplomat, political theorist, and historian. After serving the Florentine republic for 15 years and being dismissed, imprisoned, and tortured when the Medici returned in 1512, he wrote The Prince (1513), the Discourses on Livy (1517), and the Art of War (1521) from rural exile. The model takes from Machiavelli the most concrete pre-formal account of the prepared parameter set meeting the Jacobian moment. His central distinction between virtù—the settled quality, density, and coherence of the person—and fortuna—the stochastic conditions the individual cannot control—is, in the account’s own vocabulary, the integral encountering the event for which it was specifically configured. His observation that fortuna governs roughly half of human affairs and virtù the other half maps onto the account directly; the right conditions must arise, but whether a prepared integral is present to fill the opening is the product of everything integrated before the moment arrives. His admired founders—Moses, Romulus, Theseus and so on—are integrals that met their Jacobian and were ready. His Cesare Borgia is the cautionary case: tactical brilliance riding fortuna without the σ accumulation to sustain itself when fortune turned. The Prince is not a manual for amorality. It is an engineering document about what a parameter set must have accumulated to function under conditions actual political life presents. Four centuries before the formal vocabulary was available, Machiavelli had the observation right.

Iris Murdoch (1919–1999)

Irish-born British philosopher and novelist, Fellow of Somerville College Oxford. The Sovereignty of Good (Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1970) argues that when religious metaphysics dissolves, the structural position it occupied does not—something must still orient human life toward a reality not reducible to self-interest or convention. Her answer is Good itself: real rather than projected, irreducible to rule or utility, both the condition oriented toward and the activity of orienting. Her central psychological claim is that the primary moral act is perceptual—attention, the disciplined capacity to see the other accurately without the distortions of ego. In the framework’s terms, Murdoch reached an account of Good structurally from the inside: her attention is directed resonance, her consoling ego is the parameter set’s resistance to disturbing signals.

Alva Noë (born 1964)

American philosopher of mind, UC Berkeley. His Out of Our Heads (2009) argues that consciousness is not produced inside the brain but constituted by the organism’s dynamic engagement with its body and world across time. Enactivism occupies the same territory without the mathematics; the Integral offers one possible formal machinery for it.

Robert Nozick (1938–2002)

American philosopher, Harvard University. Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974) answers Rawls with an entitlement theory of justice: a distribution is just by virtue of how it came about—through acquisition, transfer, and exchange—rather than by the pattern it settles into. His rectification principle marks the limit of that claim: a distribution built on force or fraud loses it, and the entitlement is only as clean as the history behind it. The model reads Nozick as the process account of distributive justice, accumulation judged by its path rather than its endpoint, and uses the Rawls–Nozick pair in Part Five as the two positions a personal integral can settle into on inequality.

Derek Parfit (1942–2017)

British philosopher, All Souls College Oxford. His 1984 masterwork Reasons and Persons demolished the common-sense view of personal identity—the idea that there is a fixed, indivisible self that persists through time—with a series of thought experiments so sharp they have never been fully answered. For Parfit, identity is not a deep fact but a matter of degree: what matters is psychological continuity, not metaphysical essence. The integral is one constructive account that can be built on the ground Parfit cleared.

Roger Penrose (born 1931)

British mathematical physicist, Oxford. Nobel laureate (Physics, 2020). His The Emperor’s New Mind (1989) and Shadows of the Mind (1994) argue that certain aspects of human cognition—specifically mathematical insight—are non-computable, pointing toward quantum processes in neural microtubules (Orchestrated Objective Reduction). The Integral holds this provisionally: Penrose’s argument grounds the incompleteness of f(·) in three compounding reasons—Gödelian self-reference, non-linearity, and the processing-between-events conjecture—without requiring full commitment to Orch-OR.

Robert Pirsig (1928–2017)

American writer and philosopher. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (1974) and Lila (1991) pursue Quality—the pre-analytical recognition that something is right, that a pattern has landed—and argue that it is prior to the subject-object distinction analysis requires. You recognise Quality before you can say why. Pirsig’s Quality is what resonance feels like from the inside; the model asks what is happening when it does. The pursuit cost him his health.

John Rawls (1921–2002)

American political philosopher, Harvard University. A Theory of Justice (1971) asks what principles a person would choose for a society without knowing their own place in it—the original position, behind a veil of ignorance—and argues for equal basic liberties together with the difference principle: inequality is justified only where it works to the benefit of the least advantaged. The model reads Rawls as the pattern account of distributive justice, judging a distribution by the shape it settles into rather than the path that produced it. Where a reader’s integral has settled between Rawls and Nozick is, in Part Six, the clearest single indicator of what a lifetime of settled moral positioning has produced.

Hartmut Rosa (born 1965)

German sociologist, University of Jena and the Max Weber Centre, Erfurt. He stands in the fourth generation of Frankfurt School critical theory—a student of Axel Honneth, in the line running from Adorno and Horkheimer through Habermas—a tradition defined by its commitment to diagnosing social pathology and pointing toward emancipation. That inheritance matters here, because it explains the one place the Integral parts from him. His Resonance: A Sociology of Our Relationship to the World (2016; English 2019) is the most developed recent account built on the concept, and the nearest neighbour to the framework’s second pillar. On the process the two largely agree: his tuning fork rings from its own structure rather than copying a signal across the gap; his mirror neurons supply a capacity for resonance but no content, the content coming from the accumulated parameter set; and he holds resonance neutral as to emotional content, which is why we can love sad stories. The account credits all of this. They part on two questions. Rosa seats resonance in the relationship between subject and world; the model seats it in the receiver, the relationship serving as trigger and channel. And Rosa makes resonance the single measure of the good life, stopping its neutrality at the emotional axis—the malign case reclassified as alienation—where the Integral keeps the process neutral across the moral axis too. The same activation fires in the concert hall and the political rally; the moral verdict is passed downstream, on what the coupling builds or destroys, not on the event. Rosa’s project is prescriptive, as his lineage requires; the framework is descriptive.

Carlo Rovelli (born 1956)

Italian theoretical physicist, Aix-Marseille University. His relational quantum mechanics—developed in Quantum Gravity (2004) and presented accessibly in Helgoland (2021)—argues that physical properties do not exist absolutely but only relative to other systems. There is no view from nowhere. Reality is made of interactions, not substances. This is the identical ontological move the model makes at the level of personal identity: the self is not a substance that has experiences; it is constituted by its accumulated interactions. Rovelli arrives at the model’s anti-essentialism from fundamental physics upward; the Integral arrives from neuroscience and cultural theory downward. The convergence across disciplines reflects a genuine metaphysical shift—away from substance ontology toward process and relation—that the framework is designed to formalise at the human scale.

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980)

French existentialist philosopher. His core claim—existence precedes essence—arrives at the framework’s anti-essentialism from the phenomenological direction: you are not born with a fixed nature; you constitute yourself through what you do and choose. Sartre provides the existential register for what Barrett provides neurologically and Parfit provides analytically. All three clear the same ground by different routes. His account of authenticity—living in full awareness of one’s own constituted nature—is the ethical orientation of the examined integral.

Michel Serres (1930–2019)

French philosopher, Académie française. His Hermes series (1969–80) developed a philosophical account of communication and transmission that the model draws on directly. For Serres, communication is not relay—the faithful transfer of a fixed message from one point to another. It is passage: both the transmitted pattern and the receiving integral are transformed in the act of transmission. The receiving parameter set transforms what it receives in the act of integration; the transmitting integral shapes what it transmits in anticipation of being received. Both are changed. This is the philosophical statement of what the model’s formal resonance account suggests: transmission is not copying but mutual transformation. Serres arrived at this conclusion through the history of science and communication theory; the account finds the same conclusion entailed by the mathematics of coupled integrals.

Peter Singer (born 1946)

Australian moral philosopher, Princeton University. His The Expanding Circle (1981) argues that reason, once it exists in a being capable of reflecting on its own motivations, generates a demand for consistency and impartiality: if I can justify preferring my interests over yours, I must give reasons that, consistently applied, extend beyond me. The circle of moral concern has expanded historically—from family to tribe to nation to species—and reason demands it continue expanding. Singer is the framework’s primary philosophical interlocutor on moral progress: he provides the normative account of where the circle should go; the model offers the process by which it gets there and why it sometimes does not. The process Singer requires but does not supply is this: reason is a high-quality input to the integrand, but it operates against the resistance of existing parameter set configurations. The moral intuitions that resist expansion are not irrationality—they are deep early patterns formed before reason was available to examine them, whose revision requires more than argument alone. Singer says the circle should expand. The model describes when it does and why, under civilisational stress, it contracts.

Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947)

British mathematician and philosopher, later Harvard. His Process and Reality (1929) is the most complete philosophical anticipation of the framework’s metaphysical commitments in the existing literature: actual occasions (differential moments of experience), prehension (the taking account of the past), and concrescence (the integration of the accumulated into a new unity). The model may be what his system looks like when built with resources he did not have: the mathematics of accumulation, the neuroscience of synaptic plasticity, and LLMs as an abductive example that the architecture works at engineering scale.

Neuroscience and Cognitive Science13
Andy Clark (born 1957)

British philosopher of mind, University of Sussex. His Surfing Uncertainty (2016) is the most thorough philosophical rendering of predictive processing currently available. Clark sits one layer above Friston’s mathematics: where Friston specifies the update rule, Clark narrates what the system looks like from the inside—perception as the meeting of an incoming signal with an apt stream of predictions, and imagination as the same apparatus running when no signal is arriving to be met.

Antonio Damasio (born 1944)

Portuguese-American neuroscientist, USC. His Descartes’ Error (1994) and The Feeling of What Happens (1999) established that emotion is not a disturbance to reason but a constitutive part of it. His somatic marker hypothesis—the body pre-screening decision options through felt signals before conscious deliberation begins—is the biological implementation of the model’s claim that the accumulated parameter set shapes every input before it reaches conscious processing. The quality of intuition is the quality of what has been integrated.

David Eagleman (born 1971)

American neuroscientist, Stanford; founder of NeoSensory. Livewired (2020) reframes plasticity as livewiring: the connectome re-moulds continuously across the lifespan, with DNA as “the first domino” rather than a blueprint. His Potato Head model—the cortex as input-agnostic, sensors as plug-and-play—is the framework’s warrant for resonance running through any channel. Eagleman describes how the wiring changes and what it can read; the model describes what a lifetime of that changing accumulates into, how it decays and couples, and what it means. He held the whole premise—self as accumulated experience—and expressed it in principles and a recording metaphor rather than in a formal object.

Lisa Feldman Barrett (born 1963)

American neuroscientist and psychologist, Northeastern University. Her Seven and a Half Lessons About the Brain (2020) and How Emotions Are Made (2017) establish the allostatic brain: a body-budgeting system whose primary job is predicting metabolic needs before they arise. Emotions are not triggered reactions but constructed predictions, shaped by the history of what the brain has learned to expect. Barrett provides the neurological ground floor the framework builds on, and her tuning-and-pruning account of neural development maps directly onto the account of parameter set formation in early life.

Karl Friston (born 1959)

British neuroscientist, University College London. The free energy principle—his account of how the brain minimises surprise by continuously updating a hierarchical generative model of the world—is the closest scientific predecessor to the framework currently in the literature. The framework’s parameter set maps directly onto Friston’s generative model; free energy minimisation is the moment-to-moment update process. Friston provides the mechanistic bridge between the framework’s formalism and the neural substrate. The Integral diverges from Friston in being explicitly concerned with the accumulated history of the model, with civilisational-scale coupling, and with the question of identity—none of which are Friston’s primary concerns.

Peter Godfrey-Smith (born 1965)

Australian philosopher of biology, University of Sydney. His Other Minds (2016) and Metazoa (2020) examine the evolution of consciousness across the animal kingdom, with particular attention to cephalopods—whose nervous systems evolved complex cognition entirely independently of vertebrates. This independent evolution is the model’s natural experiment; the integral architecture is a general biological solution, not a vertebrate-specific one. Godfrey-Smith also provides the clearest philosophical account of what it means to have a subjective experience on a spectrum, from simple to complex, across the full range of animal life.

Alan R. Harvey (born ~1950s)

Emeritus Professor, School of Human Sciences, University of Western Australia. Music, Evolution, and the Harmony of Souls (Oxford University Press, 2017) is the most comprehensive neuroscientific account of music as biological necessity produced to date. Harvey’s central argument: music acted as a necessary counterweight to the individuating force of language. As Homo sapiens developed propositional self-awareness and explicit knowledge of mortality, music provided the only non-propositional coupling pathway capable of synchronising parameter sets across a group without requiring shared content—a harmony of souls, in his phrase, during the emergence of a society of selves. The model draws on Harvey for the anatomical basis for music’s direct autonomic access via multi-relay brainstem pathways—the hardware grounding for the frequency-domain storage account—and for the counterweight thesis as the functional account of what the framework explains mechanistically. His two-system framing (language and music) leaves schema untheorised; the Integral runs all three on one substrate.

Mary Helen Immordino-Yang (born 1973)

American neuroscientist and educational psychologist, University of Southern California. Her neuroimaging research—collected in Emotions, Learning, and the Brain (2015)—establishes that it is neurobiologically impossible to build memories, engage complex thoughts, or make meaningful decisions without emotion. Emotional engagement is not the context for learning; it is the process by which inputs are differentially weighted in the parameter set. Her finding that the transcendent emotions—awe, admiration for virtue, compassion and so on—activate the brain’s default mode network and require inward reflection for full processing, while first-order cognitive responses are handled by faster sensory-motor circuits, maps directly onto the Integral’s distinction between resonance that rebuilds and resonance that passes through. Her maths-beauty finding is the limiting case: even in domains traditionally considered unemotional, elegant equations activate the same sensory-emotional brain regions as perceptual beauty.

Eric Kandel (born 1929)

Austrian-American neuropsychiatrist, Columbia University. Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (2000). His work on Aplysia californica—a sea slug with roughly 20,000 neurons—established that the cellular mechanisms of learning and memory, synaptic strengthening through repeated activation, are present in nervous systems of extraordinary simplicity. In Search of Memory (2006) sets that work inside the history of a life. The account rests its deep-time claim on Kandel: the basic operation of the integral is ancient and conserved, and what evolved afterwards is not the operation but the anatomy that runs it.

Iain McGilchrist (born 1953)

British psychiatrist and former Oxford literary scholar. His The Master and His Emissary (2009) argues that the two cerebral hemispheres instantiate two fundamentally different modes of attending to the world, and that Western cultural history can be read as a sequence of shifts between them, with modernity dominated pathologically by the left-hemisphere mode. The Integral does not adopt the bihemispheric mechanism—distributed-network neuroscience cuts against strict lateralisation. However the supporting observations transfer cleanly: brain evolution by accumulation rather than replacement; the same substrate used differently across historical periods (an external statement of the Adaptive Integral); the explicit move beyond modular cognition toward distributed networks; cognition operating substantially below the linguistic layer; music as the ancestral resonance channel preceding language (converging with Mithen); imitation as the mechanism of cultural transmission (which the model upgrades to resonance induction); the human capacity to stand back from immediate experience as substrate for the jω axis; the defence of cross-domain synthetic argument with Simpson on principles and the Darwin-vs-Freud distinction on theory types; and a closing moment of humility in which McGilchrist himself concedes that the underlying duality observation matters more than the candidate substrate. He is the closest precedent the framework has for the kind of book it is. He named the duality and assembled the evidence; the model proposes a distributed process—many integrals coupling via resonance.

Judea Pearl (born 1936)

Israeli-American computer scientist, UCLA. Turing Award laureate. His The Book of Why (2018) establishes the ladder of causation—association, intervention, and counterfactual—and grounds moral reasoning in counterfactual capacity: the ability to imagine what would have happened otherwise is the cognitive foundation of responsibility. This grounds the account of integrity and moral choice: the examined integral is one that can hold the counterfactual in view.

Anil Seth (born 1972)

British cognitive and computational neuroscientist, University of Sussex, where he co-directs the Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science. Being You: A New Science of Consciousness (2021) develops perception as a controlled hallucination: experience is a constructed best guess, generated from the inside and constrained—controlled—by signals from the world and the body rather than read off them. His beast machine account seats that construction in interoception and the regulation of the body rather than in cognition. The model uses Seth’s phrase for what reaches the integrand: nothing arrives at the parameter set raw, and the conditioning has happened before integration begins.

Giulio Tononi (born 1960)

Italian-American neuroscientist and psychiatrist, University of Wisconsin-Madison. His Integrated Information Theory (IIT) is the most rigorous current formal account of consciousness, proposing that consciousness is identical to integrated information—measured as phi (Φ), the degree to which a system generates information as a whole over and above what its parts generate independently. In the framework’s terms, a richer and more deeply integrated parameter set—one with more connections between configurations and more resonance across regions—should, on IIT’s account, produce higher phi: a richer moment-to-moment conscious experience. This is a useful structural account of why the quality of what is integrated over a lifetime shapes the quality of experience generated. The account does not claim to solve the hard problem of consciousness; it is compatible with the most serious current formal attempt to address it.

Evolutionary Biology and Anthropology17
Gregory Bateson (1904–1980)

English anthropologist and cyberneticist. Naven (1936), from fieldwork among the Iatmul of New Guinea, named schismogenesis: the progressive differentiation of two groups against each other, each exaggerating what the other is not, with the gradient held open by refusal rather than by conflict. Steps to an Ecology of Mind (1972) collected the later work, including information as the difference that makes a difference and mind as an ecology of coupled feedback systems. The model draws on schismogenesis for its account of boundary maintenance without conflict, and on the coupled-feedback account as the nearest ancestor of coupled integrals.

Susan Blackmore (born 1951)

British psychologist and writer. The Meme Machine (1999) extended Dawkins’s memetics, arguing that imitation is the fundamental mechanism of cultural transmission and that the self is itself a memeplex—a cluster of memes selected for their ability to propagate together. The Integral’s diagnosis of why memetics stalled—it lacked a theory of what happens inside the receiving parameter set—is partly a response to Blackmore’s account, which describes replication and stops at the threshold of the receiving mind.

Robert Boyd (born 1948) and Peter Richerson (born 1943)

American evolutionary anthropologist, Arizona State University, and American ecologist and evolutionary biologist, University of California, Davis. Across Culture and the Evolutionary Process (1985) and Not By Genes Alone (2005) they built the mathematical core of dual inheritance theory: culture is a second inheritance system with its own transmission rules, its own selection pressures, and its own rate, and the two systems interact. Boyd’s specific contribution is the formal modelling of the biased transmission rules—conformist, prestige-weighted, content-biased—that determine which patterns spread. Richerson’s is the argument from population ecology that cultural evolution is a genuine evolutionary process operating on a population of minds, fast enough to track environmental change that genetic evolution cannot, with the climatic instability of the Pleistocene as the selection pressure that made cultural learning worth its metabolic cost. The model takes the two-system architecture as given and asks what happens inside a single receiver when a culturally transmitted pattern arrives.

Charles Darwin (1809–1882)

English naturalist. His On the Origin of Species (1859) provided the mechanism for biological accumulation: variation, selection, and compounding across generations explains why species have the forms they do without requiring design or fixed essence. Darwin did not invent the observation that species change—naturalists before him had mapped the pattern. What he provided was the mechanism. The pattern of cultural accumulation has been mapped with the same care by Henrich, Diamond, Harari, and others; what this book attempts is the mechanism for how experience accumulates into identity, culture, and civilisation. Darwin’s disruption of the Western deposit is itself one of the framework’s most instructive civilisational examples: a mechanism of extraordinary explanatory power arriving into a civilisational deposit whose load-bearing patterns—creation, fixed kinds, human exceptionalism—had been integrated during the formative window at near-zero decay rate. The disequilibrium was immediate and fierce. The mechanism won. The Integral suggests both the resistance and the eventual assimilation: deep early integration resists revision, especially when the pattern being revised is load-bearing and emotionally charged—but sufficient empirical density in the cultural deposit eventually moves even the heaviest prior.

Richard Dawkins (born 1941)

British evolutionary biologist, Oxford. The Selfish Gene (1976) introduced the meme concept—the cultural unit of transmission, analogous to the gene—and provided the anti-essentialist ontology on which the Integral builds. Dawkins gave us the vocabulary and the open-loop/closed-loop problem. The model attempts the closed-loop interior his memetics left open: what happens inside the receiving mind when a meme arrives.

Terrence W. Deacon (born 1950)

American neuroanthropologist, UC Berkeley. The Symbolic Species (Norton, 1997) argues that symbolic reference—the capacity to operate across a system of mutually defining relationships rather than concrete stimulus-response pairs—is categorically different from the indexical communication of other animals, not merely more complex. Crucially, his account is co-evolutionary: language and the human brain shaped each other’s selection pressure across deep time. The genome does not carry language; it carries a brain progressively biased toward symbolic processing by hundreds of thousands of years of language use. In the Integral’s terms, Deacon identifies the cognitive architecture required for the loop 2 to loop 3 transition and provides the co-evolutionary process by which the biological substrate was shaped to receive it.

Jared Diamond (born 1937)

American geographer, University of California, Los Angeles. Guns, Germs and Steel (1997) explains the initial conditions that gave some civilisations a developmental head start: geography, domesticable plants and animals, and disease gradients determined which civilisations could compound fastest from the starting gun. The Integral positions Diamond as the first element of the Diamond-Henrich-Harari triad: geography determines initial conditions, culture determines compounding rate, shared fiction determines coordination scale. All three are brought together here under a single formal mechanism.

Merlin Donald (born 1939)

Canadian cognitive neuroscientist and evolutionary psychologist, Queen’s University. Origins of the Modern Mind (Harvard University Press, 1991) traces four representational stages in the evolution of the modern human mind: the episodic mind of apes, which stores events but cannot deliberately recall or recombine them; the mimetic mind of Homo erectus, the first capacity to re-enact experience through voluntary bodily representation—gesture, rhythm, mime; the mythic mind of early Homo sapiens, with symbolic language and narrative; and the theoretic mind of the literate period, with external symbolic storage making the cultural record persistent and reviewable. Each stage is a categorical break in representational architecture, not more content within an unchanged architecture. Donald’s sequencing argument is essential to the Integral’s account: symbols followed the cognitive advance rather than causing it—the capacity rebuilds first, then its outputs become visible in the cultural record. The four stages map closely onto the account’s three accelerations of compounding: mimetic is the pre-linguistic coupling of the second acceleration; mythic is the third loop activating; theoretic is writing and everything downstream. In 1991, Donald could not have anticipated that the theoretic stage would extend into the LLM, but his framing of external symbolic storage as a non-biological hardware change applies directly to that extension. His account was developed from cognitive archaeology and the model here from the mathematics of the integrand; the two arrive at the same shape.

Agustín Fuentes (born 1966)

American anthropologist, Princeton University. The Creative Spark (2017) provides the framework’s primary anthropological grounding for the cultural deposit. Fuentes’ central thesis—that human exceptionalism rests on creative collaboration: imagination shared across coupled minds and coordinated into action—is the Integral’s account of civilisational deposit formation stated in anthropological terms. His use of niche construction within the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis supplies the process by which the civilisational deposit and the biological integral co-evolve: humans modify their environment, the modified environment modifies the selection pressures on the next generation. The two-million-year archaeological record he assembles—Oldowan tools, Acheulean hand-axes maintained across hundreds of thousands of years, ochre and shell beads, cave art as intergenerational dialogue—grounds the model’s claim that accumulation across coupled minds is older and deeper than any specific civilisational moment. His unified account of religion, art, and science as different expressions of one creative capacity, and his recognition that the same capacity produces both the Sistine Chapel and the Holocaust, aligns with the model’s structurally neutral position: the process is amoral; what it produces depends on what patterns resonate and what outer frame contains the competition.

Joseph Henrich (born 1968)

American evolutionary anthropologist, Harvard. The Secret of Our Success (2015) is the most compelling empirical case in contemporary science for the Integral’s account of cultural accumulation. Henrich’s collective brain—the distributed, multigenerational repository of adaptive knowledge that human groups maintain—is the civilisational deposit described empirically, without the formal machinery. His account of what evolution was actually selecting for—not raw intelligence but cultural learning capacity, the ability to couple to the collective brain with fidelity and bandwidth—maps directly onto the Integral’s Jacobian between the personal integral and the cultural deposit.

Julian Huxley (1887–1975)

British evolutionary biologist, first Director-General of UNESCO, grandson of Thomas Henry Huxley. His Evolution: The Modern Synthesis (1942) gave the neo-Darwinian framework its name and consolidated the integration of genetics, palaeontology, and field biology into a single coherent account. For the Integral, his more consequential contribution is the extension of evolutionary reasoning into climate, geography, and civilisational history—the argument that shifting temperate weather bands and the geography of the fertile crescent shaped which civilisations could compound fastest, anticipating by decades the biogeographical case Diamond would later develop with greater empirical depth. The chapter that did this work landed in the author’s formative window long before Guns, Germs and Steel arrived to confirm it; the pattern was deposited at near-zero decay rate and was simply waiting for the receiving anatomy to thicken enough to recognise it. Julian Huxley sits in the framework’s transmission lineage as the figure who carried the Darwinian pattern through three generations of one family—his grandfather Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895), known as Darwin’s bulldog, having been the public transmission node who ensured Darwin’s mechanism achieved civilisational rather than merely scientific resonance. Without Thomas Henry, Darwin’s integral remains a scientific deposit. With him, it becomes a civilisational one. With Julian, the pattern extends from species to civilisation itself.

Eva Jablonka (born 1952) and Marion J. Lamb (1939–2021)

Israeli geneticist and philosopher of science, Tel Aviv University, and British biologist, formerly of Birkbeck College, University of London. Evolution in Four Dimensions (2005) argues that heredity runs on four channels rather than one—genetic, epigenetic, behavioural, and symbolic—and that the behavioural and symbolic channels are evolutionary in their own right rather than decoration on the genetic one. Against Maynard Smith and Szathmáry they hold that the nervous system deserves to be counted a major transition in its own right: the enabler of behavioural and cultural heredity. The model treats that objection as correct and works on what it leaves open—the interior the transition opens.

John Maynard Smith (1920–2004) and Eörs Szathmáry (born 1959)

British evolutionary biologist, University of Sussex, and Hungarian theoretical biologist, Eötvös Loránd University. The Major Transitions in Evolution (1995) recast evolutionary history as a sequence of changes in how information is stored, transmitted, and interpreted—from replicating molecules to chromosomes, cells, sexual reproduction, multicellularity, social groups, and finally human language and culture. The model works inside their last transition. They named the door; what happens on the other side of it—how information accumulates within a single life, couples through resonance, and passes enriched into the civilisational deposit—is the interior their framing leaves open.

Steven Mithen (born 1960)

British archaeologist and cognitive scientist, University of Reading. The Singing Neanderthals (Harvard University Press, 2005) argues that a holistic musical proto-language preceded and possibly scaffolded referential language—the coupling function of music synchronising individual parameter sets into shared resonance states before symbolic transmission was possible. His earlier The Prehistory of the Mind (1996) proposes cognitive fluidity—the breakdown of modular encapsulation allowing domain-specific systems to exchange content—as the mechanism enabling the cognitive revolution. In the Integral’s terms, Mithen identifies the pre-linguistic resonance technologies of loop 2 and proposes the architectural change that opened loop 3. He and Deacon converge from different angles on the same transition.

Steven Pinker (born 1954)

Canadian-American cognitive scientist and psychologist, Harvard University. The Better Angels of Our Nature (2011) documents the long historical decline in violence across multiple scales—from interpersonal homicide to warfare to cruelty toward children, animals, and outsiders—and argues that the decline is real, measurable, and traceable to specific civilisational developments: the Leviathan, commerce, feminisation, cosmopolitanism, and the escalator of reason. Enlightenment Now (2018) extends the argument to the broader register of human flourishing: life expectancy, health, literacy, democracy, and the long arc of what the Enlightenment actually deposited into the civilisational record. In the Integral’s terms, Pinker provides the empirical accounting for what the civilisational deposit has been compounding—the measurable deposits that accumulate when the conditions for reasoned exchange, institutional restraint, and widened moral concern are sustained across generations. The Integral asks what sits beneath the data: why the deposits persist, why they sometimes reverse, and how the coupling between the personal integral and the civilisational deposit produces the aggregate curve he plots.

Dan Sperber (born 1942)

French social and cognitive scientist, Emeritus Directeur de Recherche at the CNRS and the Institut Jean Nicod. Explaining Culture: A Naturalistic Approach (1996) proposed the epidemiology of representations: culture as the distribution of mental and public representations across a population, spreading, mutating, and stabilising around cognitive attractors—the forms toward which transmitted representations converge because those forms are easier for human minds to hold. It is the most rigorous attempt in the memetics tradition to ground cultural transmission empirically, and it stalls at the wall Dawkins met. Sperber can map where representations settle without saying why any individual mind accepts, modifies, or rejects one. His epidemiology needed a germ theory. In the account his cognitive attractors are resonance basins, and the population-level distribution is the shadow of within-mind resonance.

Michael Tomasello (born 1950)

American developmental and comparative psychologist, co-director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig for two decades. Across The Cultural Origins of Human Cognition (1999) and A Natural History of Human Thinking (2014), Tomasello’s matched comparative method—identical experimental tasks given to human infants and great apes—established that prelinguistic infants engage in joint attention in ways great-ape infants do not, even when raised under similar conditions. Joint attention is the first observable behavioural expression of the receiving anatomy for the third loop. His two-step developmental architecture—joint intentionality emerging with small-scale collaborative foraging in early Homo, collective intentionality with conventional culture in modern humans—is the developmental specification of the framework’s language-as-upgrade account, and his cultural ratchet is the term the framework uses for compounding of the third loop. The model parts with Tomasello on cooperation as the engine of human cognition: competition and collaboration are both ancient and continuously present, balanced within shared outer frames rather than one giving way to the other.

Canadian-American psychologist, Stanford University. His social learning theory—established across Social Learning Theory (1977), Social Foundations of Thought and Action (1986), and Self-Efficacy: The Exercise of Control (1997)—demonstrated that patterns transmit through observation prior to and independent of direct reinforcement. Watching a model is sufficient for learning. In the Integral’s terms, observational learning is resonance induction through the social field: the effective model pulls the observer’s parameter set toward a more advanced pattern without requiring the observer to act or receive reward. Bandura’s concept of self-efficacy—the parameter set’s settled estimate of its own capacity in a given domain—is the primary determinant of whether chosen disequilibrium is attempted at all. Low domain self-efficacy produces a frozen sector: The formative window is open but the parameter set has concluded in advance that crossing it will fail.

John Bowlby (1907–1990)

British psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. His Attachment and Loss trilogy (1969–1980) introduced the internal working model—the cognitive-affective schema built from early interactions with caregivers that governs expectations and responses in all subsequent attachment-relevant situations. The internal working model is a parameter set in all but name: the earliest, deepest layer of the integral, laid down before language and operating largely outside conscious awareness throughout life. The Integral generalises Bowlby’s concept to the full temporal span of a life and to all domains of experience.

Jonathan Haidt (born 1963)

American social psychologist, New York University Stern School of Business. His Moral Foundations Theory—evolved emotional structures, each with its own attractor basin, present across cultures and firing before deliberation begins (The Righteous Mind, 2012)—supplies the account of the pre-configured moral architecture and the moral prior the culture then deepens through resonance. His second load-bearing image is the elephant and the rider: intuition arrives first and reason follows to justify it, the rider convinced he steers while the elephant goes where its accumulated weight takes it. The Integral runs that relation at every scale—in one mind the elephant is the parameter set and the rider is conscious reasoning; in a civilisation the elephant is history and the rider is the ideology of the moment. Haidt’s native scale is the individual and the moral community, and the model’s move is to carry his mechanisms upward. His The Anxious Generation (2024) sits directly beneath the book’s account of social media as a formative environment.

Robert Kegan (born 1946)

American developmental psychologist, Harvard Graduate School of Education. His constructive-developmental framework—The Evolving Self (1982) and In Over Our Heads (1994)—is the most important extension of Piaget into adult development. Kegan’s central mechanism is the subject-object distinction: what a person is subject to they cannot examine because they are constituted by it; what they hold as object they can reflect on and deliberately modify. Development is the repeated process of configurations that were formerly subject becoming object—f(·) changing its form, not merely its contents. Kegan documents five qualitatively distinct orders of mind in adulthood, each a structural transformation of the integration function rather than a quantitative increase in knowledge. The university education chapter draws on Kegan directly: the transition from socialised to self-authoring mind is the formative transformation the institution exists to deliver.

Dan McAdams (born 1954)

American personality psychologist, Northwestern University. His narrative identity framework—that identity is the internalised, evolving story a person constructs to explain how they have become who they are becoming—is the closest established parallel to the Integral in academic psychology. McAdams has the robust empirical literature; the Integral offers a formalism and a substrate for it. In the Integral’s terms, the narrative is the integral consulting itself: the parameter set generating an account of its own trajectory.

Damian Milton (born 1973)

British sociologist, University of Kent, and an autistic scholar writing from inside the condition he studies. His 2012 paper ‘On the ontological status of autism: the double empathy problem’ (Disability & Society) reframed autistic social difficulty as a two-way phenomenon: autistic people communicate with each other at rates comparable to non-autistic people communicating with each other, and both fall away across the boundary between them. The distance is mutual; only one party had been measured. The model reads the double empathy problem as the cleanest available test of its own coupling account—that the ease of coupling between two minds tracks the distance between what they have accumulated, rather than a faculty present in one party and missing in the other.

Jean Piaget (1896–1980)

Swiss developmental psychologist. His stage theory of cognitive development—sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, formal operational—is, in the Integral’s terms, the most useful psychological description of how f(·) changes qualitatively across childhood. Each stage is not a quantitative accumulation of more knowledge but a qualitative transformation in the integration function itself. His two mechanisms—assimilation (processing new experience through the existing configuration) and accommodation (rebuilding the configuration in response to inputs it cannot process)—are the Integral’s plateau and step-change dynamics, extended by the model across the full lifespan and into the chosen/imposed disequilibrium distinction.

Karl Pillemer (born 1951)

American gerontologist and sociologist, Cornell University. His decade-long research into family estrangement—summarised in Fault Lines (2020)—found that more than a quarter of the American population is living with an active estrangement from a family member, and that almost all such estrangements follow the same structural pattern: a fault line of accumulated tension that predates the triggering event. The earthquake does not cause the fault line; it makes it visible. Pillemer’s research also documents what successful reconciliation actually looks like in practice: not the recovery of the prior relationship but the formation of a new one, built from small low-stakes re-engagements rather than from the resolution of contested history. Both findings map directly onto the Integral’s account of the family as a multiple integral whose patterns have the lowest decay constants of any in the personal parameter set.

B.F. Skinner (1904–1990)

American psychologist, Harvard University. The dominant figure of twentieth-century behaviourism. His radical behaviourism—developed across The Behavior of Organisms (1938), Verbal Behavior (1957), Beyond Freedom and Dignity (1971), and About Behaviorism (1974)—systematically mapped how reinforcement schedules shape and maintain behaviour. Skinner deliberately excluded internal states from his account: only observable behaviour and its environmental consequences were admissible. The Integral inherits Skinner’s empirical data while reversing his methodological exclusion: what Skinner observed externally—differential persistence under different schedules—is what the decay function suggests internally. Variable ratio reinforcement produces the lowest decay constants; fixed interval schedules produce the highest. Skinner is the most rigorous empirical cartographer of decay rate variation in the existing literature.

Lev Vygotsky (1896–1934)

Soviet developmental psychologist. Working in Moscow in the years before his early death from tuberculosis, Vygotsky produced two works of lasting consequence: Thought and Language (1934/1962) and the papers collected in Mind in Society (1978). His Zone of Proximal Development—the band of tasks a learner cannot accomplish independently but can accomplish with the guidance of a more capable partner—is the Integral’s practical cartography of chosen disequilibrium: the location at which coupling with a more developed integral produces rebuilding the learner cannot generate alone. Scaffolding is the operative technology of the ZPD: the temporary support that allows a learner to cross a threshold they could not cross unassisted, then withdraws as the new pattern consolidates. Vygotsky’s account of language internalisation—social speech becoming inner speech, the cultural deposit flowing into and modifying the personal integral—is one of the clearest available descriptions of how civilisational patterns enter individual parameter sets during development.

Fernand Braudel (1902–1985)

French historian, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, leading figure of the Annales school. His three-volume The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II (1949) and the later Civilization and Capitalism trilogy (1979) introduced the longue durée—the deep, slow-moving structures of geography, climate, demography, and material life that operate at timescales the actors inside them cannot perceive. Above this slowest layer, Braudel identified the medium time of conjunctures (economic cycles, institutional shifts) and the fast surface of événementielle history (political events, individual actions). The account reads Braudel as the historiographical anticipation of the three-layer power-ideology-culture model: culture as the slowest sediment, ideology as the conjunctural interpretation, power as the fast event. His insight that the actors at the surface are constrained by structures invisible to them is the civilisational expression of the Integral’s account of the unconscious parameter set governing from the position of subject. Braudel mapped the long curve before there was formal vocabulary for what he was tracing.

William Dalrymple (born 1965)

British-Indian historian, currently based in Delhi. Across In Xanadu (1989), White Mughals (2002), The Last Mughal (2006), Return of a King (2013), The Anarchy (2019), and most recently The Golden Road (2024), Dalrymple has rebuilt the historical record of the southern transmission axis—the Indosphere—that runs from the Indian subcontinent through Central Asia, the Islamic world, and Southeast Asia. The Golden Road in particular argues that the silk-road framing has overstated east-west exchange and understated the southern axis through India and the Islamic world, and that the accumulated knowledge Europe rediscovered between roughly 1100 and 1500—Greek philosophy, Persian astronomy, Indian mathematics, Chinese material technology—had been actively developed, corrected, and extended by the civilisations through which it passed, not preserved in aspic. The model draws on Dalrymple directly for the Indosphere chapter and for the structural correction to the standard account of the Renaissance: what arrived in Florence was processed inheritance, not the originals.

George Dangerfield (1904–1986)

British-American historian. The Strange Death of Liberal England (1935) traces the apparent collapse of the Liberal Party between 1910 and 1914—the Lords crisis, the suffragette militancy, the Ulster mutiny, the great labour unrest—as a sequence of simultaneous Jacobian inputs that the Liberal civilisational deposit could not absorb without rebuilding. Dangerfield’s argument matters to the framework because it reads political collapse not as the failure of policy or personality but as the exhaustion of an integration architecture: the Liberal frame had absorbed a century of compounding patterns and reached the point where the accumulated tensions could no longer be contained within it. The model reads Dangerfield as the case study in what happens when the outer integral that holds competing patterns together thins below the threshold required for generative competition—the warning case that sits behind the chapter on the present condition of liberal democracies.

Jean Dong (born 1972)

Chinese-Australian political scientist, Research Fellow at the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies, University of Melbourne, and Visiting Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. Chinese Statecraft in a Changing World: Demystifying Enduring Traditions and Dynamic Constraints (Springer, 2023) is the framework’s primary source for the Chinese civilisational deposit—the settled patterns of geography, Confucian institutional design, legitimacy management, and strategic culture that constitute China’s specific civilisational identity and that shape its contemporary behaviour. Her Dynamic Constraints Analysis is, in the Integral’s vocabulary, an account of how the deposit a civilisation has laid down continues to govern its present behaviour through patterns integrated long before the current ideological surface formed. The framework draws on Dong directly for the China and Examination Integral chapter and for the Vietnamese case in the Indosphere section: in both cases, the surface political configuration is the rapidly-changing power layer; the integral beneath it runs older and deeper, and reading the surface without the substrate produces a category error of the kind the dominoes theory of the Vietnam war exemplified.

Niall Ferguson (born 1964)

Scottish historian, Hoover Institution at Stanford. Across Empire (2003), Civilization (2011), The Square and the Tower (2017), and Doom (2021), Ferguson has constructed the most systematic recent account of why the Western civilisational deposit compounded faster than its peers from the sixteenth century forward. Civilization identifies six killer apps—competition, science, property rights, medicine, the consumer society, and the work ethic—that produced the differential. The model treats each killer app as a living multiple integral rather than a static configuration: an institution is not a set of rules but a resonating cluster of individual parameter sets whose coupling produces outputs no single integral could generate, and whose persistence depends on the continuous reproduction of sufficient shared resonance among the carrier integrals to keep the founding patterns alive. Ferguson identifies what the West had. The Integral asks by what process it was held—and under what conditions it can be lost.

David Graeber (1961–2020) and David Wengrow (born 1972)

American and British archaeologists. Their The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity (2021) demolishes the standard narratives of civilisational development—the Hobbesian war of all against all, the Rousseauian progressive ladder—showing that early human societies were far more varied, experimental, and self-conscious than any standard model predicted. Complexity arose without hierarchy; egalitarianism was maintained rather than merely inherited; choice and refusal acted as civilisational forces in their own right. The parallel with Parfit is direct. Parfit demolished the reified self at personal scale and left the mechanism unanswered. Graeber and Wengrow demolished the reified civilisational narrative and left the mechanism equally unanswered. Both cleared ground the Integral builds on. That human activity is stochastic and path-dependent is not a problem for the framework—it is a confirmation of it. The Integral does not predict which path any civilisation takes. It predicts the shape of the process: that accumulated choices compound, that patterns transmitted through resonance persist while those that fail to resonate decay, and that small changes integrated over time produce patterns no individual actor designed or anticipated.

Yuval Noah Harari (born 1976)

Israeli historian, Hebrew University. Sapiens (2011) is the most widely read account of civilisational history in a generation. Harari’s cognitive revolution—the sudden explosion of human cultural complexity associated with the development of full modern language—is, in the Integral’s terms, the moment when the coupling pathways between individual integrals became powerful enough to produce a genuinely cumulative civilisational deposit. His shared fictions—the ability to collectively believe in things that do not exist as physical objects, like gods, nations, and money—are highly resonant memetic patterns capable of drawing vast numbers of individual integrals into shared parameter states. Harari describes the civilisational deposit; the Integral proposes how and why it works.

Tom Holland (born 1968)

British historian. Across Rubicon (2003), Persian Fire (2005), In the Shadow of the Sword (2012), and Dominion (2019), Holland has written civilisational history with unusual attention to what is being transmitted at the level of deep cultural pattern. Dominion in particular argues that the moral assumptions of the modern secular West—the universal dignity of the person, the obligation to the weak, the suspicion of power, the expectation that history bends toward justice—are not the products of Enlightenment reason but of 2000 years of Christian civilisational accumulation, deposited so deeply into the cultural layer that they are now experienced as common sense rather than as the specific inheritance they are. The account reads Holland as the empirical demonstration of the three-layer model’s deepest claim: the cultural layer carries patterns integrated during civilisational formative windows long after the ideological scaffolding around them has dissolved. Modern secular humanism does not stand outside Christianity. It is what Christianity looks like once the metaphysical scaffolding has been removed and the settled moral pattern remains.

Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones (born 1965)

British classicist and ancient historian, Cardiff University. Persians: The Age of the Great Kings (2022) is the most thorough recent recovery of the Achaemenid civilisational deposit from the Persian rather than the Greek perspective. Llewellyn-Jones works from the Persian sources, the archaeological record, and the administrative documents of the imperial bureaucracy to reconstruct what the Achaemenid court was actually doing—a place of genuine intellectual sophistication, administrative excellence, and cosmopolitan exchange that absorbed and integrated the deposits of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Lydia, and a dozen other traditions. The framework draws on Llewellyn-Jones to correct the structural distortion that Greek historiography introduced into the Persian Wars chapter: the stories were written by the winners, and the winners were extraordinarily good at writing stories. The Persian perspective on Salamis was probably that of a logistical overextension and a tactical mistake in a narrow channel, not the collision of civilisation with barbarism that Greek tradition subsequently constructed.

Jonathan Lyons

Scholar and journalist, formerly a Reuters correspondent and editor, historian of the medieval encounter between Islam and the West. The House of Wisdom: How the Arabs Transformed Western Civilization (2009) is the book’s primary source for the Islamic Golden Age—the four centuries between roughly 800 and 1200 CE during which the Abbasid civilisation acquired, translated, corrected, and substantively extended the accumulated patterns of Greek philosophy, Persian administration and astronomy, Indian mathematics, and Chinese material technology. Lyons traces the translation movement itself—the Syriac Christian translators trilingual in Greek, Syriac and Arabic who identified errors and gaps, al-Kindi engaging Aristotle as a powerful but fallible parameter set to be tested and extended, and the wider Baghdad scholarly culture—and his account makes clear what the standard Western narrative routinely understates: the Islamic scholars were not preserving the Greeks. They were arguing with them, correcting them, and producing genuinely new patterns the Greek tradition had not reached. The model draws on Lyons directly for the Islamic chapter, for the four-channel transfer thesis, and for the structural correction that runs alongside Dalrymple’s: what arrived in Florence between 1100 and 1500 was processed inheritance, not the originals preserved in aspic, and the processing was itself substantive intellectual work performed by a civilisation whose contribution the Western tradition has only recently begun to honour adequately.

Simon Schama (born 1945)

British historian, Columbia University. Citizens (1989) is the framework’s primary source for the French Revolution chapter—the granular reconstruction of how the patterns of 1789 actually moved through specific minds in specific rooms, and how the Terror emerged not as the betrayal of the Revolution but as the structural consequence of resonance amplification without error-correction in a parameter set whose institutional constraints had been dismantled. The Story of the Jews, in two volumes (Finding the Words, 2013; Belonging, 2017), is the framework’s primary source for the Judaism section of the Religion chapter—the documentation, in granular detail, of how a civilisational deposit re-engineered itself under conditions of existential pressure to maintain coupling density across two millennia of dispersion, persecution, and repeated attempts at elimination. Schama’s central narrative gift is the recovery of how civilisational patterns are actually passed down—not in documents but in the practices, families, and rooms in which the parameter sets that hold them continue to live. The framework draws on Schama for both case studies and treats his work as the gold standard for what civilisational history written from inside the carrier community looks like.

Simon Sebag Montefiore (born 1965)

British historian, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Cambridge PhD. Descendant of Sir Moses Montefiore, the nineteenth-century philanthropist whose patronage helped lay the foundations of modern Israel—a civilisational lineage that runs directly through the work. Across Catherine the Great and Potemkin (2000), Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar (2003), Young Stalin (2007), Jerusalem: The Biography (2011, revised 2024), The Romanovs (2016), and The World: A Family History (2022), Sebag Montefiore has produced one of the most readable bodies of civilisational history in contemporary letters. Jerusalem: The Biography is the framework’s foundational source for the city as the physical and political stage on which the three Abrahamic civilisations—Jewish, Christian, Islamic—have collided, coupled, and continued to compound across three thousand years. Where Schama documents the Jewish civilisational deposit from inside the carrier community, Sebag Montefiore documents the contested ground on which it has met the deposits of the other two great Abrahamic traditions, and the specific patterns of place, ritual, and memory that make Jerusalem the most resonant city in the human record. The framework draws on Sebag Montefiore for the religion chapter and for the broader claim that certain physical locations function as civilisational resonance anchors—geographies whose settled patterns are dense enough that they continue to activate the parameter sets of integrals who have never visited them.

Daron Acemoglu (born 1967) and James A. Robinson (born 1960)

Turkish-American and British-American economists, MIT and Chicago respectively. Nobel Prize in Economics (2024). Why Nations Fail (2012) establishes that the quality of institutions—specifically whether they are inclusive or extractive—is the primary determinant of long-run civilisational development. Their inclusive/extractive distinction is the Integral’s account of civilisational deposits locked in either compounding or decaying trajectories. Critical junctures—the major disruptions that upset existing power balances and open windows for institutional change—are the Integral’s civilisational-scale Jacobian events. The Integral proposes a micro-foundation for their institutional economics: the process by which institutional patterns enter and persist in individual parameter sets.

Milton Friedman (1912–2006)

American economist, University of Chicago. Nobel Prize in Economics (1976). Capitalism and Freedom (1962) and A Monetary History of the United States (1963, with Anna Schwartz) argue that inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon, and that markets coordinate distributed local knowledge more efficiently than any central planner can. The stagflation of the 1970s validated the first claim empirically, and the economic architecture of liberal democracies since 1980 has been substantially Friedmanite: independent central banks, liberalised capital markets, privatisation, labour market flexibility. In the framework’s terms Friedman is one of the three patterns that make up the economic deposit of a working liberal democracy, and the independent central bank is his deposit in it.

Keyu Jin (born 1982)

Chinese economist, Harvard-trained (Ph.D. 2009); Associate Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics through the writing of her book, and since 2025 Professor of Finance at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The New China Playbook: Beyond Socialism and Capitalism (2023) is the framework's primary source for the contemporary Chinese growth model—what Jin calls the "mayor economy," in which a strong central state devolves economic decision-making to competing local governments, promotes officials on the growth they deliver, and leaves land as the principal instrument for raising the capital to fund it. In the Integral's vocabulary this is competition nested at two scales: firms contending within a region, regions within the national frame—competitive inner integrals held inside a shared outer frame strong enough to keep the rivalry generative rather than ruinous. The framework draws on Jin directly for the modern-China passage in the civilisation chapter: the demonstration that the same deposit which, under the examination system, was structurally resistant to new-direction compounding will ignite one the moment the competitive variable is switched on—as the electric-vehicle industry now shows. What Jin presents as an economic model, the account reads as the process of civilisational ignition running in real time.

John Maynard Keynes (1883–1946)

British economist, King’s College Cambridge. The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (1936) established that an economy can settle at a stable equilibrium well below full employment, and that demand management can move it—the analytical basis for the post-war mixed economy, the welfare state, and the Bretton Woods institutions. The framework treats the post-war consensus as an update to the civilisational deposit laid down in the formative window the Second World War opened, and reads the survival of its institutions after the Keynesian consensus broke in the 1970s as a deep pattern outlasting the ideology that installed it.

Karl Marx (1818–1883)

German philosopher, economist, and political theorist. Das Kapital (1867) and, with Engels, The Communist Manifesto (1848) identified the structural tendency of capital to concentrate, the extraction of surplus value from labour, and the capacity of the material conditions of production to shape consciousness rather than merely respond to it. It is the last of these that the model touches. Marx described a civilisational deposit being written by the conditions of work, and his account of ideology as the surface expression of a deeper material accumulation prefigures the power-ideology-culture layering. The account parts from him on prediction: what he read as a determinate sequence toward replacement, it reads as one pattern competing inside a shared frame. The welfare state is Keynesian infrastructure maintained by Marxian political pressure.

Joel Mokyr (born 1946)

Dutch-American economic historian, Northwestern University (Robert H. Strotz Professor of Arts and Sciences; also Sackler Professor at Tel Aviv University). Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2025 (with Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt) for explaining innovation-driven economic growth. A Culture of Growth (2016) is the synthesis of his career: the book that joins the history of the Enlightenment to the history of economic growth in a single argument. His central analytical contribution—the distinction between propositional knowledge (knowing why: science, natural regularities, principles) and prescriptive knowledge (knowing how: techniques, recipes, skills)—and his argument that the Industrial Revolution required these two types to enter sustained positive feedback for the first time, fills the gap between Acemoglu-Robinson (inclusive institutions enable compounding) and Ferguson (specific patterns that proved most generative). The institutional structure that enabled this included the Republic of Letters, a transnational, non-hierarchical community of scholars whose norms—openness, priority, replication—maximised the Jacobian between individual integrals and the cultural deposit across national and confessional boundaries. Mokyr’s fragility warning: the culture of growth is not self-sustaining; it requires active maintenance of the carrier community that holds those norms as genuine operating values. The moment the carrier network thins below critical mass, the patterns return to books and the knowledge stops running. In the Integral’s terms, Mokyr documents the most consequential civilisational-scale update to the deposit in modern history and explains the cognitive and cultural process by which it ran—not through institutions alone but through what was actually being accumulated, transmitted, and compounded inside the minds networked by the Republic of Letters.

Joseph Schumpeter (1883–1950)

Austrian-American economist. His concept of creative destruction—the incessant process by which new patterns replace established ones, driving economic development—is the economic expression of the Integral’s account of civilisational Jacobian events. Creative destruction is what happens when the economic deposit is inclusive enough to allow new patterns to displace existing ones. The businesses and civilisations that resist creative destruction are those whose deposits have become extractive—using institutional power to prevent the updating that would allow continued compounding.

Adam Smith (1723–1790)

Scottish moral philosopher and political economist. The Wealth of Nations (1776) established the market as an information-coordination mechanism—the invisible hand aggregating individual decisions into collective outcomes that no central authority could design. The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759), his earlier and in many ways deeper work, establishes that markets operate within a moral framework they presuppose but do not generate: the shared norms of fair dealing that make exchange possible. In the Integral’s terms, Smith’s moral commons is the cultural deposit that makes the economic one possible.

Thomas Bayes (1701–1761)

English statistician and Presbyterian minister. His theorem—that the posterior probability of a hypothesis given evidence is proportional to the prior probability of the hypothesis multiplied by the likelihood of the evidence given the hypothesis—is the mathematical skeleton of the Integral’s account of how the parameter set processes incoming experience. Every new input is not evaluated from neutral ground; it is weighted against everything previously integrated. The prior shapes what the evidence can do. This is why two parameter sets with different priors process identical evidence and arrive at irreconcilable conclusions—and why both conclusions are, within their own settled shape, mathematically coherent. The Integral’s most direct application of Bayes is in the Hume exchange: Hume’s argument against miracles is Bayesian reasoning applied to religious testimony, and the Integral shows that neither Hume’s sceptical conclusion nor the believer’s credulous one is irrational—they are the outputs of different priors installed by different civilisational deposits. Bayes also grounds the self-sealing dynamic: a pattern with a sufficiently strong prior will reshape incoming evidence before it can challenge the pattern, assimilating potential refutation as confirmation. The prior is not irrationality. It is the accumulated parameter set doing exactly what it was built to do.

Geoffrey Hinton (born 1947)

British-Canadian computer scientist, Google/Toronto. Turing Award laureate (2018); Nobel Prize in Physics (2024, with John Hopfield). His foundational work on distributed representations and backpropagation—the calculus-based algorithm by which neural networks learn—established that integration over accumulated inputs produces functional understanding at engineering scale. The LLM that emerged from this lineage is the Integral’s abductive example: something built on the same architectural principles as the framework demonstrably works.

John Hopfield (born 1933)

American physicist and neuroscientist, Princeton University. Nobel Prize in Physics (2024, with Geoffrey Hinton). His 1982 paper showed that a network of binary nodes connected in an n-dimensional matrix can store information in a distributed form, with memories held as minimum-energy states the network settles into—an associative memory that reconstructs a whole pattern from a fragment of it. The Hopfield network is where the account of the synaptic matrix begins: distributed storage, attractor states, and reconstruction rather than retrieval. The account’s departure is to relax his constraints. The biological matrix is asymmetric and dynamic where the classical Hopfield network is symmetric and static, which admits complex eigenvalues, oscillatory modes, and therefore resonance.

Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749–1827)

French mathematician and astronomer. The Laplace transform—the mathematical tool that maps functions of time into functions of complex frequency, represented as σ + jω—provides the formal foundation for the Integral’s σ + jω dual-component formulation of the self. Laplace was building tools for celestial mechanics; the Integral borrows his machinery to describe the shape of identity. The σ component captures the accumulated weight of past experience; the jω component captures the oscillatory present engagement with the world. The self is a complex number.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716)

German mathematician and philosopher. Co-discoverer of calculus, independently of Newton, and developer of the d/dx notation that British mathematics—loyal to Newton’s dot—refused for a century at extraordinary cost. The Integral is built on calculus; the dispute that followed Leibniz’s claim is the framework’s instructive negative case (treated in Part 5). Leibniz’s wider philosophical commitment—the principle of sufficient reason, the monad as a unit of perception accumulating its own history—anticipates the Integral’s process commitments. The monad does not have an integral; it is one, in seventeenth-century vocabulary.

Isaac Newton (1643–1727)

English mathematician and physicist. His Principia Mathematica (1687) is the framework’s paradigm exemplar: mathematical law extracted from empirical observation, expressed in a form testable and extensible by any competent practitioner anywhere in the world. Newton did not invent gravity or the orbits—Kepler had mapped the orbits with extraordinary care a generation earlier. What Newton provided was the mechanism: the inverse-square law of gravitation that explained why the orbits had the shape Kepler had observed. Newton also co-discovered calculus—the mathematical tool the Integral is built on—independently of Leibniz.

Bernhard Riemann (1826–1866)

German mathematician. In 1854 he produced two things: a rigorous definition of the definite integral, and, in the habilitation lecture on the foundations of geometry, the generalisation of geometry to curved manifolds carrying their own metric. The model uses both. The Integral is, structurally, a Riemannian object: the parameter set is a manifold whose curvature is continuously reshaped by the experience accumulating across it. Newton gave the model calculus; Laplace gave it the σ + jω transform; Riemann gave it the integral itself and the geometry on which the integration runs. One caution follows from the same work. Integrability is not solvability: a function can be perfectly integrable and still admit no closed-form antiderivative. That, and not the integrability criterion, is why f(·) has no closed form.

Erwin Schrödinger (1887–1961)

Austrian physicist, Nobel laureate (Physics, 1933), founding Director of the School for Theoretical Physics at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. What Is Life? (1944), delivered as lectures at Trinity College Dublin, established two ideas the framework depends on. The aperiodic crystal hypothesis—that hereditary information requires a structure in which every position is individually significant, since a repeating structure is specified by a single unit cell and therefore carries almost nothing—is the founding statement of the principle that information storage requires aperiodicity. The parameter set is an aperiodic solid at the neural level: a set that merely repeated its configurations would encode nothing about the person, and it is the aperiodicity of an accumulation shaped by one unique trajectory that carries identity. The negentropy argument—that an organism holds its order by importing order from its surroundings, feeding on negative entropy—is the thermodynamic condition on which Friston’s free energy minimisation later builds, and it is load-bearing for the framework rather than ancestral to it. Information in Shannon’s sense is symmetric, the same quantity measured in either direction; meaning is not, because it depends on which system is receiving and on what that system has to lose. That asymmetry can only come from the thermodynamic arrow, and Schrödinger supplies the condition that makes it available: a system that must hold itself against the gradient has, with no mentality required, a criterion of better and worse. That is the physical origin of having stakes, and stakes are what separate meaning from information. The model operates at the information level and rests on the thermodynamic one. Schrödinger’s philosophical coda states what Chalmers would later name the hard problem and poses the arithmetical paradox of many minds in one world; the account answers the paradox through resonance and leaves the hard problem where he left it.

Claude Shannon (1916–2001)

American mathematician and electrical engineer, Bell Labs and MIT. His Mathematical Theory of Communication (1948) founded information theory—defining information as a measure of uncertainty, entropy as unexpectedness, and proving that error-free transmission is possible at any noise level. His founding exclusion is the Integral’s founding claim: the semantic aspects of communication, he wrote, are irrelevant to the engineering problem. He was right about his problem. The Integral addresses a different one—what happens in the receiver after the signal arrives, permanently, cumulatively, uniquely. Shannon measured the channel. The Integral describes what the channel became.

Geoffrey West (born 1940)

British-American theoretical physicist, Distinguished Professor and past President of the Santa Fe Institute. His career began in particle physics at Los Alamos National Laboratory before he turned, in the late 1990s, to the problem of scaling laws in complex systems. Working with ecologist James Brown and botanist Brian Enquist, he derived the quarter-power scaling laws of biology from first principles—showing that the fractal geometry of biological distribution networks necessarily produces the metabolic and life-history regularities observed across all living organisms. He subsequently extended the same empirical and theoretical programme to cities and companies, finding that socioeconomic outputs scale superlinearly with city population while company metrics scale sublinearly, and developing the network-topology explanation for why cities persist while companies die. His 2017 book Scale synthesises this work for a general audience. West was named among Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2006. The model draws on Scale for its account of how the outputs of coupled integrals scale with resonance network topology, and for the phase-transition conjecture: that each major transmission upgrade shifts the scaling exponent of collective mind output upward.

Norbert Wiener (1894–1964)

American mathematician, MIT. The founder of cybernetics; Cybernetics (1948) and The Human Use of Human Beings (1950) set out a general account of control and communication in animals and machines. The Integral’s three-loop account—genetic slow loop, neural fast loop, cultural selection loop above both—is a direct intellectual descendant of Wiener’s cybernetic framework, now applied to the full scale of personal identity and civilisational history. Three Wiener contributions sit directly upstream of the Integral. The entropy framework: life as a local enclave of decreasing entropy in a universe trending toward disorder—the operating environment the Integral formalises, with the decay term λ as the entropy pressure and the accumulation integral as the local counter-tendency. The learning distinction: simple feedback corrects performance within a fixed pattern; learning changes the pattern itself—the Integral adds differential weighting to specify which pattern-level changes persist. The information-theoretic observation that the more probable a message, the less information it carries—the prior art for the frozen integral’s structural limitation. His phrase for f(·): “the internal transforming powers of the apparatus.”

A Note on Absences

Several significant thinkers are present in the framework’s intellectual background but do not appear as named figures in the main text. Pierre Bourdieu’s habitus—embodied, durable dispositions accumulated through experience—is the sociological integral, arriving at the same territory from the direction of social science. William James’s Varieties of Religious Experience documents the phenomenology that the Integral’s account of maximum-breadth resonance requires. These figures inform the model without being named within it. The omission is structural, not evaluative.
